Errors are Gold
If learning is littered with costly experiences of wrong even if we are doing well, it can carry the anxiety of avoidance. Doing well becomes tainted and carries doubt and anxiety.
Imagine have no fear of mistakes, no fear of doing it wrong.
Mistakes serve a particular purpose in providing information that at this time, under these conditions, a reward will not occur, or worse, something to avoid occurs and do not approach it again.
Strengthen your training confidence:
➤ Error learning is part of puzzle solving: being agile and mentally fit. Learn how to choreograph error learning for both you and your dog. Establishing competence and skill and asking for application in new situations, some of which may not be successful first time and need adjustment: this is error learning: knowing what to do different.
➤ Analysing the type of error: this is where the information is held. Is this error yours: are you self-aware and able to read when the dog thinks you made the mistake?
Could this be anxiety or fatigue: what are the signs?
➤ Using effective feedback and avoiding “wrong” or least reinforcing stimulus. Confirmatory silence to build the confidence and safe learning.
➤ Handling Mistakes: responding with information not a vacuum. Recognising when errors have become a route to rewards, usually to gain more attention
➤ Using continuously variable rewards to keep the behaviours on track NOT variable schedules that can irretrievably damage confidence in you.
Over the six weeks we shall work though a series of exercises to explore error learning, re-building the learning confidence and take away your fear of making mistakes.
Your dog will forgive you, we can rebuild.

The Need to Correct an Error
Are you an Active Learner?
It would not matter what subject we are talking about: cooking, shopping, playing golf or training your dog if you are not working at getting better then you are getting worse. Cruising without paying attention is a sure way to let your skills slip. Driving by habit with no recollection of the journey: did you see that waving potato by the road?
