A Go Further Training Course:
Luring is a Skill
Skilled luring is the most relevant form of learning for our dogs who are designed to follow scent: with skills of clean communication they can become super learners.
Communication that is clear and clean builds strong learning without confusion: a difference between a hand to be followed and a hand open for delivery. How the reward is presented, at what speed, where, and with what pleasure it suggests are all part of the communication. When the anticipated reward is loaded the dog will be waiting for information.
Skilled luring can teach balanced movement, changes in momentum and precision in body placement.
Knowing when to reduce and remove the lure-guidance is part of the art of successful training.
There is a danger of over-luring: when the lure is very direct (up the dog’s nose) or maintained for too long after the learning is established.
We shall look at the Half-Lure and converting or fading the lure into a cue.
This course includes different forms of luring from hand held lures, luring stations and Cup on a Stick© (COAS). Participation for hand luring requires attendance to the Hand Choreography, otherwise only COAS may be used – which is an excellent starting point to build the luring skills.
